I just got the newest book in the series I am reading and was wondering how many other people read fantasy books and what your favorites are. I am a total Dritzz Fan, big suprise to those of you who know who he is I am sure. I have read all the RA Salvatore books with him in it. I also like wheel of time and I am starting to get into the sword of Shinarah books and also the Dragonlance books, I love those too.

Unfortunately the threads for books must have been on the old boards. Ok, I hope that this helps you figure whether your tastes coincide with mine in regards to fantasy...I am not a big Robert Jordan fan (his books are too long for the stories)...and I didn't particularly like the Thomas Covenant series. My favorite books of all time are The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings (read first time back in '83 and 9 or ten times since). Being a little more old school these are some books that I would recommend:
Michael Moorcock:
The Elric series (the first 7 books particulary the first...I find Yyrkoon to be one of the best fantasy villains ever)Elric is kind of the anti-hero and would be considered a shadow knight in EQ. The Corum Series The Hawkmoon Series
Fritz Lieber
All of the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser books. Fafhrd is a barabarian rogue and the Grey Mouser is a human rogue.
Hickman and Weis:
The Dragonlance series (Raistlin is a great character)
David Eddings:
The Mallorean The Belgariad The Elenium
Ursula LeGuin (my favorite professor in college):
The Earthsea series
Katherine Kurtz:
The Derynie series
lol this list is getting long and there is alot to add...

I can't pick just one!
I love the Forgotten Realms books starring Drizzt myself. So far from what I've read, I've enjoyed the Icewind Dale trilogy and the Dark Elf trilogy best.
(off topic -- just saw a preview of the new Forgotten Realms PS2 game coming out, where at some point Drizzt becomes a playable character. The storyline was at least partially written by R.A. Salvatore.)
Of course The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, awesome stuff.
I buy anything written by Guy Gavriel Kay -- my absolute favourite book from him is 'Tigana'. Kay was heavily influenced by Tolkien, loves weaving political intrigue into his books, and does a fantastic job of fleshing out his characters.
I've read three books by Robin Hobb, her "Assassin" trilogy. Very memorable characters and cool villians. Really nasty villians -- not Yrkoon level mind you.
Finally, George R.R. Martin has an incredible series of 3 novels with a fourth coming out shortly. Many twists and turns, deaths, murders, deception, sex, politics, dragons -- it's all there and it's all gooood.

Ahhh the George RR Martin series. They are great books. As for the first one I preordered it the week before it was to be published.........Sept 2003! I think his dog must have eaten it or something.
For me I love Jordon, Tolkein, Salvatore, but Stephen King's Dark Tower series is my favorite. Its not really swords and sorcery fantasy but its a nice change of pace. Also his book Eyes of the Dragon is excellent traditional fantasy.
