Mackleeric has asked me to come to the census office and register for her. She does not want to be seen by the eyes of the church of freeport. Mackleeric does not believe her leaders would take kindly to her being a part of anything but the freeport church. Upon hearing her story i agreed to comply with her request.
Mackleeric's first home, where she was born and partially raised, is Queynos. Here she lived with her parents in the poor quarter. Though poor monetarily she was rich in the love of her family. She was the youngest of 3 children - 1 sister and 1 brother. The family all attended church since Mackleeric was born and she loved the music, the flowing robes, the soothing chants, the comforting rituals and the kindness of its leaders. Whenever errands took them past the church she would tug at her mother's dress and beg to go in - just for a moment. When it was clear to her parents that this was no passing fancy, they sought to find a way for Mackleeric to be apprenticed to the church. Miracles do happen and the church in queynos accepted her into their fold. She was a model student. The church had high hopes for Mackleeric seeing her potential.
A year or so had passed when tragedy struck. Her parents killed by the gnolls while visiting friends near Wyndhaven. Her siblings too condsidered dead when the brothers boot was found down in the ravine as well as her sister's ruby necklace.
Mackleeric was so heartbroken that she could barely function. This went on for weeks, the church was at a loss as to what to do. She had an Aunt and Uncle that lived near Freeport, so they dispatched her to the Freeport church where she would be near other family members.
Mackleeric was uplifted to see her Aunt and Uncle and cousins, and was looking forward to learning even more from the new Order in Freeport. ( we must remember that at this time of change in her life, Mackleeric is only 10 years old).
Though Mackleeric continued studying the same abilities, spells, incantations, chants etc. there was something different, but she was so busy with studies and work - scrubbing, washing, sweeping, cooking and on and on - there was no time to concentrate on what that difference was. Time passed and at 13 she began to wonder what had happened to her, where were such thoughts and actions coming from. She tried to remember life in Queynos but could not focus on anything particular - it was all a blurr. Only her passed missions and accomplishments were clear. Her superiors were pleased with her performance. But there was something nagging at her.
One night in her 14th season she had a dream about one of her ealier missions. The Sister was giving her instructions and in an aside comment she said " to continue our efforts to spread hate throughout Freeport".
Mackleeric remembered the dream when she awoke and thought on it. She did not hear that at the time.. she was concentrating so hard on the who, what and where part. Confused now, as she believed the church was to help those in need in whatever area of their life was needy, to bring enlightenment and hope to the down trodden.
She mentioned her dream to her Aunt and Uncle who dismissed it simply as a silly dream and chided her for questioning the Church who speaks with god and who does she think she is anyway?
Silence and obedience were her only recourse. Of course she is just an apprentice with much understanding and wisdom yet to be gained. who is she to question the teaching methods of her most wise and knowing superiors she would say to herself.
(And so, though that still small voice keeps calling to her that something is not as it should be - Her busyness, her need to be accepted and her lack of self confidence keep her from listening). Macleeric is now in her 15th season as i write this census for her. She makes her apologies for not coming in person, but the Freeport church is very big on the oath of loyalty to only the one whom they serve and therefore she serves.
