As she pulled into the stables at Neriak, Aquella sighed in relief. She knew it was in her training that she make the trip to the gnomish city of Klick Anon to familiarize herself with the allies of Neriak, but it was still nice to be home.
She entered the Enclave of the Spurned, and went directly to her quarters. It had been a hard journey, and she was exhausted. After a bath and a bite to eat, she settled in to review the latest spells she had learned, when a note on her desk caught her eye.
Printed on thick parchment, and sealed with black wax stamped with a rose, the note did not say who it was from on the outside. Wary that it may be a trick played by the other students, Aquella first decided not to open it. However, as it had many many times before, her curiosity got the best of her head, and she opened it.
What she read made her blood run cold through her veins and her eyes well with tears.
"My dearest child,
By the time you read this, i will be long dead. I write to you only due to the kindness of my captors, and with the hope that their word be true when they say it will be delivered to you.
If you are unable to guess, this is your father. I am sorry i cannot be there for you and your mother, but i trust she is caring for you in the best way she can. I hope she has taught you all you need to know of your lineage - both sides. But this is not why i write to you.
There is something of which your mother cannot know, it is for you only, my little one, and with luck you will find the way to it with ease. In your second year of training, you will be taught to disguise letters by concealing their contents. If you know the reversal spell, speak it now..."
And she did, they had learned it last week from Dominary K'Jartan when she was substituting for the Elementalist who was ill. With a trembling voice, she began to recite, and her eyes widened as the letter of her fathers swirled into nothingness leaving a spell written in red ink on the page.
"Read this, my angel, and feel me nearer to you" the top of the page now read. Aquella thought for a moment - perhaps she should show this to the Elementalist. Before she could decide, she realized the page was begining to glow. She had begun the incantation without even realizing it conciously.
When she had finished, the words disappeared. She felt no real difference, and exhausted from the effort, she went to bed. As her head was about to hit the pillow, she was startled by a knock on the door, and rose grumbling to answer it.
She was met by Cassandrae, one of the Dominary's star pupils. Smirking, she looked Aquella directly in the face and asked,
"Going to bed so soon, half breed? Can we expect another performance tonight?"
She left before Aquella could ask what it was she meant and, dismissing it as another of their cruel jokes, she went back to bed.
She slept fitfully that night, tossing and turning, plauged by dreams of her father and mother (as she saw them, not truly knowing what they looked like) she woke many times on the verge of tears and not sure why. In the morning, she rose barely rested, and made her way to the washroom. After splashing her face with cold water, she looked into the mirror and screamed loud enough to wake the dead.
There, she saw her eyes - once a strange shade of violet and blue - had become red as the blood that ran through her veins. Her hair, which was once (not unlike her mother) a beautiful raven black, was now streaked with wisps of a silvery gray color that framed her face.
Unsure of what had happened, she quickly rummaged through her closet and found a black cloak with a hood. Wearing it over her robes to disguise who she was and hide her face, she made her way through Neriak in the early hours of the morning, and left immediately to find help in Freeport. She had heard the greatest healers in the world congregated there to shop for their supplies and make money healing the sick. Perhaps... if she was lucky, she may find someone who can tell her what she had become.
(This is where i have to leave it... anyone with healing experience can pick it up in Freeport, just notice me walking around looking for something and ill go with whatever you come up with. Thanks)
