::::A man in barbarian’s clothes walks solemnly in the door of the tavern. He glances about for the face he can barely recall, but sighs a little with relief when his eyes settle on her scared face :::
“Wilkens?”
“Yeah, what?” Wilkens looks up to see a man she has only seen once before. She recalls that he was traveling with Slyfoot by the woods several weeks ago.
“Slyfoot requested that I give this to you. I have included my own account of what happened as well. The letter is hers though. Please read it, it is of immediate importance.” And then the man turned, and left with out another word. Wilkens, slightly confused as to what this may be about, begins to read the several pages of parchment the mysterious man gave to her:
It was the last day of the 5th year that she had not seen Bornus. We were traveling to Crethley Manor in hopes to discover clues about his disappearance. What we found was more than expected.
While traveling on the last hill just behind the manor, we fell into a hidden hole in the ground. The rubble blinded us for a moment, but when the dust cleared we saw a passage way. There was a faint light flickering from within a room at the end. With little choice as to where to go for the hole was deep and it‘s walls were steep, Slyfoot lead on. She traveled down the dark hall way, wearing a robe she had not worn in years. It was the politicians robe, so she called it, that Bornus had given her 6 years ago. She adorned it lovingly, carrying her staff as she walked down the hall. But when she reached the entrance to the small room, she stopped dead in her tracks, her staff falling from her hand. She stood there, like she was in shock. I went to her, and picked up her staff, waiting for her to explain. In the room lay a body of a man, preserved by spells from the rotting gnawing that death chews at ones corpse. Then I saw it, the engraving on the floor describing the corpse. It said:
Bornus Crethley, son of Lord Crethely. Died of…
I couldn’t read the rest.
“ Oh Slyfoot...I'm so sorry...I'm so very sorry for you…’ I went and kneeled beside the corpse of her lover. She slowly walked forward and in a calm, yet emotionless voice she bid me “Just step away…”
Doing as she had asked, I backed away as she kneeled beside her fallen love. She felt through his robes looking for something, until she found a piece of paper. She opened it and then let it flutter from her hands. It was her letter that she had written over a year and a half ago to him. I felt so sorry for her. She then looked softly at Bornus, but did not cry. She ran her hands across his face and then picked up his hand and rubed it against her check…the only man who could touch her and not cause her pain. I could hardly stand to watch her. But then she backed away, took out some parchment and began to write. I stood back, keeping my distance. After a short time she rose, and walked towards me.
Clamly, “ Asthar?”
“Yes?”
“I make this one request of you. Take this letter to Wilkens. She is the girl you met that day. You will find her in the Songweavers Tavern.”
“Alright,” I said taking the letter. “Will you stay here?”
She didn’t answer me. Instead she walked back to Bornus’s corpse and kissed him on his lips. She had told me she had never kissed anyone. She lingered for a moment, and then she rose from the corpse and took out her dagger.
“Slyfoot…what are you doing?”
She then placed the dagger to her heart!
“SLY!”
I rushed to her side and took hold of her wrist. “Don’t….please don’t…”
Slyfoot then looked into my eyes, a blank emotionless stare, and mumble the words to a spell. I felt my body being forced back, she was controlling me, forcing me to back away. She then proceeded to place the dagger back at her heart. I strained as hard as I could against the spell, but I knew I could not reach her. Maybe I could talk her out of it. She had helped me so much in the past.
“Slyfoot...if you go and kill yourself it leaves no reason for me to NOT kill myself...I have lost a lover as well…”
Slyfoot paused. “....just fufill my request, that is all I ask...that is all I have ever asked.”
“Slyfoot...why did you save my life? Why did you prevent me from killing myself? because whatever reason you give, if you take YOUR life, won't mean a blasted thing…”
Slyfoot just whispered back to me, “ ....that’s all I ever asked.…”
And then it happened…she took a small breath and slowly pressed the dagger into her heart.
“ SLYFOOT!” I ripped out of the spell, my muscles screaming in white hot agony, but I didn’t care, I only cared about saving her if I could. I reached her and pulled the dagger from her bleeding chest as she still stood there. But then she muttered again, a stronger spell, forcing me back yet again.
“Slyfoot...please don't do this...please...you can't leave me...you can't…” I could feel my eyes filling with tears as I watched her stagger to Bornus’s side.
“I know that I'm not him, and I know that I could never even come close, but someone on this plain still loves you…”
She lay beside Bornus, wrapping his left arm around her, and putting his right palm on her face. Leaning her head against his face, she rested her arm across his cold chest.
“…slyfoot….” I felt my legs buckle beneath me as I cried freely.
Barely above a whisper, Slyfoot began to speak to Bornus as she faded away.
“..I have a poem for you…”
“ When darkness had me in its hold,
You held me tighter.
“When my life was not my own,
You gave it to me.
“When I felt pain,
You took it from me.
Her voice got weaker and weaker, but she keep whispering the poem she had always wanted to tell him. My heart was crushed. All I could do was sit there sobbing as I heard her words leak from her mouth.
“When I ached,
You soothed.
“When know one knew,
You understood.
“When life was so far,
You brought it so close.
“When I had nothing,
You gave me everything.
“When no one would hear me,
You listened.”
She had become so quite..so quite. Then with her last breath she made out one last phrase.
“When I had never known love,
You…..you….showed…..me.”
Then she sighed a final sigh, and I felt her spell dissipate from holding me….she was gone….
