Yet again I was sent on a mission to retrieve an item stolen by an insubordinate gone bad. It was a boring, meaningless, waste of my time sort of mission, but I wanted to gain the reward associated with it, so I took a few hours out of my day to complete this petty task.
I wandered down the road heading north from Freeport, scuffling my feet and stomping on any twigs or small weeds that were in my way. Any time I would come by a guard tower I would deceive the guards into thinking I was a human, and then make faces at them as I walked by. They just looked back at me as if I were insane. I’m sure my lovely blue hair aided that assumption.
I had been sent to retrieve a key that some trader’s servant had kept for his own uses instead of giving it to whom his master had commanded. Ah, I wonder at the stupidity of humans at times. Hmmm….lets see. I have a greatly valuable key and a deprived servant. Why don’t I give the key to my needy servant and send him to give it to another rich lord, who will treat him like dirt? I couldn’t think that my servant would betray me, I mean, why would he? I give him the scraps off my table to eat. Isn’t that enough? And that leaking shack to sleep in. Who wouldn’t be happy with that? I just don’t see any reason he would betray me.
Alas, the servant did, for no apparent reason other than greed. The servant had sold the key off to an other trader for a nice sum, enough to buy a decent house and some tasty food. So here I was, nearing the building the new key holder dwelled in. I had been warned of this trader being protected by two guards. Ooooo, play time I thought.
I neared the guards and changed my appearance into that of a human once more. I walked right up to them and stared at them. They stared off into space, trying to ignore me, but I could tell I had their complete attention, and their peripheral vision was glued on me. Then I began to walk slowly by them, my head turned away from them, looking at them as if I was ignoring them, they way a cat would. One of the guards was a wimpy girl who’s father must have hated her to send her off to military school, for she had absolutely no reason regarding her physical well being. The other was a hunk. He was tall, handsome, and fully equipped with armor. Hmmm, which one to chose? I tough choice but…. I chose the big one!
I then began to mutter my spell under my breath as I acted like I was walking away, for I knew the guards would stop me if I tried to enter the building. After all, they were supposed to protect their trade master inside. When I finished my spell I spun around and walked up to the larger of the two guards.
“Hello, I was wondering if you could help me, I am very upset. But I need to do so in private. ‘Why don’t you check the out posts’” The last part I whispered.
The guard, who was under my charm, did exactly as I commanded. “Why don’t you check the out posts.” He said to the wimp of a woman who had no right to call herself a guard. Obviously my assumption that the larger guard was in command was accurate, for the girl pretend guard walked off without a word. At least she was not blonde.
“Ok, now I need your help. You see, that man in there killed my pet…ah…my pet grass snake. I loved that snake! Will you kill him for me?”
“He killed your, your snake! How dare he, of course I will kill him for you., that horrible man!”
I followed my hunk of a guard into the building, uninterrupted. We walked right up to the open door with the key trader and one of his associates comparing the tastes of two ales. Ale! Ah, must not get side tracked….errrrr.
“There that one, kill him!”
And the guard leaped upon his master as I bound his associate’s feet to the floor with invisible arcane cords. My handsome beast easily bested the trader, and I walked up to his corpse as the associate broke loose of my spell. I waved my hand and the guard pounced upon the other. I reached in the trader’s pocket and grabbed the key I was requested to retrieve. I then walked over the table to grab both jugs of ale. I sat down to drink while the guard and the associate battled it out.
“Hey, could you keep it down, I can hardly hear myself drink over here.”
My charmed guard apologized and tried to muffle the other’s grunts as he continued his attack.
One jar finished, I took a sip of the other ale, and then put it away in my sack, next to the key. I don’t know what the two were arguing about, both ales tasted like they should be tagged dangerous for ingestion.
“Cummon Fabio, lets go.” I commanded the guard to follow me out the door, with the associate still clinging on to the guard’s leg. Me and my odd couple walked out the door. I waved good bye to the female pretend guard and stuck my tongue out as I passed by. She gave me that “whats wrong with that girl” look. I continued to walk down the road, back to Freeport and then changed into my Tier’Dal appearance, my guard and his infuriated captive following me. I stopped, he stopped.
“Drop it Fabio,” I commanded as my guard let the associate fall into the dust. The associate then leapt upon the guard, as my guard stood their taking the beatings, staring blankly into space as his life was pounded out of him. “Good, boy, now attack.” The guard, nearly dead, killed the associate and then my spell wore off, and he blinked back to awareness.
“Huh? Where I am I? You!”
And he attacked me, but I had prepared for this moment and simply dashed my staff across his head, knocking him out, and left him to his fate on the side of the road.
I walked back to Freeport, stomping on more weeds, making faces at the same guards, key in one hand, and ale in the other. Oh, my life is so difficult.
