Gaien once again lays down next to a cozy fire and drifts off to sleep…
A sudden rush of plasmic heat and the squeal of dying metal pulled Gaien’s attention from the intense fighting about him to glance at his Heads Up Display. His Super Nova’s left arm had been reduced to molten slag from the blast of a Particle Projection Cannon from a nearby battle ‘mech, leaving him with only three Extended-Range Large Pulse Lasers in his right arm and barely enough cooling pods to keep up a constant rate of fire.
Dropping his 95-ton beast of a machine into a crouch, Gaien maneuvered the giant behind a boulder the size of three houses and checked his sensors again. No friendly Identity Frequencies flashed back at him across the radar. Damm he thought. Now he was surrounded by other ‘mechs and still 20 clicks out from base. To make matters worse, the enemy was using some sort of jammer to prevent Gaien from radioing base and calling for help.
His unit had started the day out relatively nice. A Brisk patrol in the early winter air and a few planned stops at various Nav’s were all that they had planned before returning to base, loading onto their jump ship and heading home for Christmas.
At Nav Gamma, Gaien’s Super Nova, Kit spotted some high heat signatures escaping from nearby snow mounds. He radioed them in to his team lead, Lieutenant Dargais, and increased his humanoid ‘mechs gate to a jog. As he approached the heat signatures they grew more intense and his thoughts about Christmas vacation were brought to an abrupt end.
Enemy ‘mechs, bearing an insignia he had never seen before, leaped out of hidden enclosures in the snow and began to rain steel and plasma furry onto Gaien’s small unit. Dedrick’s ‘mech went down in the first few volleys. He had only a lightly armored Firemoth and the first bust of a heavy auto-cannon shredded his ‘mech. The uranium tipped slugs tore through the light ‘mechs fragile body like a knife through hot butter, gutting the torso almost completely, exposing the vulnerable fusion engine. A trio of medium laser blasts ruptured the volatile engine, creating a massive fireball where Dedrick’s Firemoth used to be.
His friend’s death hadn’t even registered in his mind when a volley of long-range missiles rocked Kit. They impacted like a series of hammer strikes and reduced the Ferro-titanium armor of his left torso to little more than paper-thin. Another well placed shot in that location and they might expose the internal structure of his ‘mech.
Gaien lowered both his mechs arms and sighted in on the ‘mech that had launched the missiles at him, a ‘mech with the vague shape of some insect. He waited for his crosshairs to give a green light and then let a blast of electric-blue energy fly forth as he unleashed all six large lasers at his opponent. They basted into the bug-like ‘mech and sent it reeling, the pilot barely managing to keep the ‘mechs balance as Gaien fired at him again. The heat inside of his ‘mech became stifling as he lashed out again, but Gaien was too intent on finishing his target before it was too late.
He directed the large lasers with the precision of a surgeon and targeted the insect shaped ‘mechs missile ammo bays. His first shot did little more than melt away some of the armor on the protective housing, but his second and third shots punctured through and ignited the ammunition, starting a chain reaction as the explosive ammo ruptured inside the mech. By the time the rest of his shots landed the ‘mech was already on its back, thrashing in its death throes as the many tons of ammunition exploded inside, finishing Gaien’s work. It was then that Kit had been hit by the PPC.
Gaien flicked on the seismic tracker and scanned it for any indication as to where his opponents might be and how many might be left. Immediately he discovered the answers he wanted and immediately wished he hadn’t. Three battle ‘mechs were slowly encircling his position and if he didn’t act quickly they would trap him against this boulder and cut off any hope of escape.
Kit wasn’t built for speed. She was a behemoth of armor and firepower, able to duke it out with the heaviest of ‘mechs and take the same in punishment. Now he needed her to move as fast as possible and Gaien could barely rouse more than a job out of her. Checking his HUD he noticed that one of his stabilizing gyros had been struck, slowing the movement and balance of his ‘mechs right leg. Gaien pushed Kit into a jog but it wasn’t fast enough. The blast from an auto-cannon sheared off what was left of Kits already damaged leg and sent the giant tumbling forward.
Gaien’s world was turned into a violent roller coaster as Kit somersaulted across the terrain before slamming into an outcropping of stone. Sparks hissed at him and broken panels were strewn about what was left of the cockpit. He had several broken ribs and a large laceration above his left eye that was making it difficult to see, but that was not the worst of things. Kit was a ruin. She couldn’t run, let alone walk and her right arm had snapped off in the roll, leaving Gaien defenseless. Gaien reached for the emergency release button on his harness, hoping to escape the ‘mech and run back to base by foot.
For some reason his arms wouldn’t respond. Glancing about he found his right arm pinned beneath twisted metal and his left arm broken in at least three places. Gaien was just pondering how to get out of his predicament when the feet of a giant battle ‘mech filled his view…
The remaining three ‘mechs assaulted Kit with all their firepower and what scouts would find later, after the battle, would be nothing more than a blasted, molten slag heap. Nothing more would mark the gave of Corporal Gaien C. Mayree…
Gaien awoke with a start. His stomach growled at him and Gaien vowed to never again eat sweets just before bed...
