(From home.comcast.net/~bretwd/NWN_Gnome.htm)
Gnomes are likely to be the least popular of all races. They often carry with them the stigma of second-class dwarves and are sometimes even portrayed in a comical, bumbling manner. To make matters worse, they aren't an attractive race physically, at least to non-gnomes.
So what is it about them to make anyone want to play one? Well, they are fun-loving, enjoy a good sense of humor, have quick minds that grasp engineering marvels other races would fail to comprehend, enjoy pranks and jokes, and sometimes show a reckless bravery in their desire to explore and discover. While they might only stand 3 to 3½ feet tall while weighing only 40 to 45 pounds, they are an enduring race that survives well to 350 years (with some exceeding 500 years even and reaching adulthood at 40). With dark skin (deep tan to earthy brown), eyes of a variety of blues, and fair hair (with men usually wearing a short, neatly trimmed beard), they often have soft expressions and large noses making them seem a jovial, even timid race. However, their love of adventure and fearless nature when curiosity gets the best of them makes them an interesting race to role-play as they are a mixture of unusual aspects and vivid personality.
Role-playing a Gnome (as is the case with all races) can be done in a number of manners and there is certainly no right or wrong way to play one. However, in general, there are characteristics to the race that are more common and associated with them. For the Gnome, they are associated with curiosity and good humor. The standard adventuring Gnome is probably one that wants to discover more about the world, learn more about their chosen profession while testing their limits, and who wants to have some fun even at the risk of death (in fact, the risk of death might even be part of the fun). Again, though, it should be noted that there are exceptions to every rule and so the player who wants to role-play as a Gnome should give each their own personality.
