The erie howl of the wind frightened the child into hiding as the merchant ship tossed wrecklessly to and fro. Her father ordered her to stay below deck, as he usually did when a storm approached. She pleaded with him to seek shelter this time and prepare for the worst, as even at the age of six, the special elven child could smell the hate brewing in the black clouds as they surrounded the small craft. Her father, lacking the sensitivies that his daughter inherrited from her late mother, did not feel the ominous presence and shuffled her below deck with a false reassurance of her safety.
As she hunched down in the corner of her sleeping quarters, she softly spoke words that she hoped would somehow reach her mother. As she spoke, the tossing of the craft grew increasingly worse and the girl was jolted from her prayers as the angry waves hurled the ship against a jagged pile of rocks. The girl shrieked in fear, but sensing a loss, ran to the deck to find her father.
As she ran through the ships corridors, she was suddenly aware that the puddles she splashed through were growing deeper. Fear pushed her forward faster. As she burst through the doors to the deck, there was no sign of her father and all she could see was that the small merchant ship had been torn apart mercilessly by the rocks and waves.
Taken by grief and fear, the child could only stare, paralyzed as she saw the giant wave building. With a mighty force the wave crashed over what remained of the ship, hoping to make it and it's passengers nothing more than splintered wood and bones on the floor of the sea.

Warmth shrouded me and light washed over me as I slowly blinked open my eyes. Confusion clouded my mind as I looked upon my unfamiliar surroundings. As I tried to figure out where I was and how I got there, fear gripped my heart.
I knew nothing of myself or from whence I came. I could recall no person, not a friend nor a family member, no memories at all. Just as panic was setting in, a graceful elf entered the room where I rested.
"Ah, it is good to see you finally awake, child" said the elf.
"Who are you and how did I come to this place?" I asked cautiously even though the elf woman looked kindly and I sensed no evil about her.
"Well, child, you have been sleeping for well over a week now. I found you on the shore outside of Freeport, where I was traveling for business. You were badly battered. From the look of things, it seems that you managed to survive a pretty troublesome storm. Anyway, I tended to your wounds and carried you with me to the Smiling Serpent Inn. That is where we presently remain."
Her reply brought me no comfort as I still could not recall the events that had led me to this place. The woman interupted my disturbed thoughts.
"Child, my name is Tessarina Starshimmer, what might your name be?" she asked.
Uneasy with my mind, I replied.
"I do not know."
"Well, little one, you still require much healing. Please allow me to take you back to the church in Fayspires where I can tend to you properly. Perhaps, in some time we will be able to help you recover your memory as well. In the meantime, I sense a special quality about you and would desire you to study the ways of a healer."
I was confused and scared, but the mere presence of Tessarina brought me comfort and peace. As I did not want to be left alone in a strange place, I agreed.
"I will follow you, miss Tessarina, if you will be so kind as to call me by a name other than child."
"That is glorious news! And, my child, I shall call you by Healingrayne."
"Healingrayne" I said, and thought to myself that the name rang quite comfortable with me.
