(as taken from Kyrinn and Mnemosys' Tower of Lore)
Brell Serillis created the gnomes in his second pact with the gods, having created the dwarves in the first pact. The gnomes, like many of Tunaria's races, carved out a niche for themselves in a secluded area. For the gnomes, that area was in the northeast, near the Lavastorm Mountains. Their city of Klick`Anon soon became a technological wonder, complete with a lava-powered steam plant and fully-operational clockworks. The gnomes built massive walls in the valley approaches to their kingdom, and worked in peace for many years.
Over time, some of their contraptions found their way out of the confines of Klick`Anon, either through neglect or experimentation. Many of these misfit devices made their way east, where the Rogue Clockworks was formed. Because of its secluded location, the Rogue Clockworks was able to grow unchecked for many years.
The gnomes are aware of their new neighbors, the Teir`Dal, that have moved into Neriak to the south. Right now, the two races exist in uneasy neutrality, along with the trolls. The gnomes seem to feel that all races are an annoyance, but as long as they don’t interfere with their research, they can be tolerated.
At the dawn of the Age of Adventure, the gnomes are even more intent on searching for greater sources of power and have begun probing the Lavastorm Mountains more and more. Rumors of great riches in the mountains abound, prompting the creation of Ludvick Undogeem’s automated mining machine. These violations of the mountains’ stability will likely result in disastrous results in the future. Prophets have talked about great upheavals of the land, immense flows of lava, and a beast of fire with immeasurable strength. Although these visions hint at the destruction of Klick`Anon and the Rogue Clockworks, the gnomes continue unabated.
Meanwhile, on the continent of Faydwer, a small group of gnomes settled on a small area of land near the Elizerain Lake. These gnomes departed Tunaria with the elves during their great exodus. Prior to the War of the Broken Crown, they were treated almost like slaves by the Teir`Dal. However, with the dissolution of the old Elven Empire, the gnomes were somewhat liberated. Nonetheless, they didn't really fit in well with the elven society and started lobbying for a new homeland. King Carandril of the elves gave them the area by the Steamfont Mountains, which, unbeknownst to everyone, was occupied by a poison dragon. After the exploration party was slaughtered, an elven hero named Edril led a hunting party back to Steamfont. He defeated the dragon in single combat, earning him legendary status among both the gnomes and the elves. The gnomes then moved into the region, building the city of Ak`Anon in the image of their beloved home, Klick`Anon. The remains of the plague dragon are still visible outside the city gates.
While Klick`Anon remained the pinnacle of gnomish society, Ak`Anon was little more than an outpost, maintaining in relative obscurity for many years. No one would believe that one day, this city would be home to all the gnomes on Norrath.
