Traditionally Ocath is my silly character while Hakiko is more serious.
“Rise now former pupil and accept the shawl of a Librarian of Stormwind!”
The Grand Librarian draped the shawl around the young woman’s shoulders with pride. Surely one of his finest students in years, Leeza had a long distinguished career ahead of her.
The crowd erupted in applause as Leeza bowed and exited the stage.
The Grand Librarian’s heart sank as the next graduate approached. Not everyone could be the best student, Ocath however was not even passible. But his father was an important noble and funds were tight.
The large boy caught his toe on a step about halfway to the podium crashing to the floor. The Grand Librarian grimaced as a few audience members chuckled.
No the boy was not bright, or graceful. He had tipped over countless shelves accidently with his bulk. But he was enthusiastic about his work. None could doubt his love of the Library, despite the fact that many 8 year olds could read better. His love for books was boundless.
Young Ocath gathered himself and knelt clumsily before the Grand Librarian.
“I am ready for my testing!”
He was not ready of course. He never would be ready. There would be no real test for Ocath. No questions about guardians or obscure books. No there was only one question for the son of a rich noble.
“Ocath, what is the greatest joy in the service to the Library?”
The young man’s eyes gleamed as he rose to his feet.
“To find missing books! See them returned to the library! And to hear their lamentations at the late fines!”
“Rise now… Well you are already standing… Accept the shawl of Field Research Librarian of Stormwind!”
The crowd, confused, clapped and a few laugher uncertainly.
“Thank you all for coming to support the future of our Library.”
As the Grand Librarian turned from the podium his assistant, Belker, fell in step with him.
“Sir, we don’t have a position called Field Research Librarian.”
“It would appear, Mr. Belker, that we do.”
“But what does a Field Research Librarian do?”
“Mostly he knocks things over, Mr. Belker, I’d start there.”
The three pigs charged Ocath as he ran across the field. Knocking the large sow aside with his shield he gutted one of the boars with his sword. The sow stepped back dazed.
Seizing the opportunity Ocath turned on the other boar as it lept at him. Ocath brought his sword down hard severing the boars head at the neck. Blinded by the spray of pig’s blood the he turned to slow and the sow knocked him over from behind.
Ocath rolled onto his back and grabbed the sow’s ears as she charged in for a bite.
“Sorry princess, not today.”
He twisted the sow’s head breaking her neck. Springing to his feet Ocath covered the ground to the farmhouse in five large strides. Without pause he kicked the door in splinters flying.
The two masked men inside dove for weapons screaming, “The Brotherhood will not tolerate your actions!”
Ocath grabbed the ankle of the nearest diving rogue and threw him into the fireplace. With an inhuman shriek he staggered back out burning into a curtain.
Ocath caught the knife wielding arm of the other rogue mid stroke. He twisted it until he heard it snap, the rogue screaming in agony.
Behind him the cries from his burning foe gurgled to a stop as the room filled with smoke.
Ocath threw his opponent to the floor. Grabbing a chair he drove the legs through the Defias’ torso, ribs crunching. Ocath sat down in the chair and picked up the book on the table. It was a worn copy of Building Easily Exploitable Flaws in Fortreses 2nd Ed with bonus Regent Kidnapping Chapter.
He leaned over as blood bubbled from the dying rogue’s mouth.
“This book is overdue.”
