Darth Vader has always been my favorite character in the series. When I was little I even had an autographed picture of him on my dresser (true story). Revenge of the Sith completely destroyed Darth Vader's image in my mind.
Before Revenge of the Sith he was a fallen hero. A tragic villain who had commited a past wrong and descended so far into the Dark Side that he could never go back. He was a complete bad ass who got the drop on everyone from the very first scene in A New Hope until his death in Return of the Jedi, and by the end of Return of the Jedi I really wanted him to be redeemed,
In Revenge of the Sith, Lucas took the tragicaly fallen hero and turned him into a spouse abuser and child slayer. How many Jedi did Vader kill - not one. There is a place for that kind of bad guy, but it shouldn't have been Vader. I can't wish redemption for someone who abuses his wife and kills children, and thus the character has been ruined for me.
In my opinion Lucas should have left well enough alone and never gone back to make the first 3 episodes (though we did get to see Yoda as a bad mofo)
But hey, you cant please everyone.

I think the whole point was to show just how bad the dark side is. I think it made it all the more tragic to see him tricked into becoming the evil monster. To be fair Lucas didn't show him cutting down children, and Lucas said before hand that you wouldn't see Vader cutting down Jedi left and right, though it was implied. There is no way the whole Jedi temple was empty of Jedi. Lucas wanted the focus to be on the character himself and the emotional struggles he goes through. He humanized Darth Vader, you see the deception that gripped him, that is why I liked this movie and it is at the top of the list in my humble opinion.

Yes, I go back and forth between Empire and Revenge...I agree Phelan, it was implied that he slew many Jedi in the temple, Lucas probably didn't want to show these battle since it would have diminished the impact of the battles between Yoda and Sidious and Vader and Kenobi.
I also agree...that Vader's plummet to the Dark Side was tragic, but this guy ordered the destruction of a planet of Billions, I don't think a little spousal abuse or child killing is any worse.
The strangest part of the whole, was that the Sith never lied. Dooku never lied, nor did Sidious...though obviously they ommited parts that weren't relevant to them...such as that Amidala was killed by Vader's rage which caused her to see the truth that he was totally evil.

Good Point, I didnt' even think about that. That is strange, you would have thought you would see them lying blantantly or something, I mean these are supposed to be corrupted people.

but in all truth, not havin seen the movie yet, were any of the evil star wars chars realy honestly evil. they all had plans to take over some sort of planet or somethin, the worst they ever did was kill the cute lil ewoks an actually listen to jar jar. but just in the other movies they never really were evil or corrupted.
oh i dunno, just my 2 cents worth on this thought...lol

ummm...they killed billions of innocent people on Alderaan in a completely arbitrary fashion midway through the first film. I think that fits my definition of evil.

Indeed, last time I checked, blowing up an entire planet ranks pretty high on the evil meter! I thought the third film did a good job of showing how neither side was perfect. Even the Jedi were willing to bend their code to suit their purpose.

The emperor was the epitome of evil. Granted it was a different sort of evil than you may think of, it wasn't running around killing and torturing, though they elude in the movies that the empire frequently does such things. He enslaved almost the entire known galaxy into the empire, ruling be fear and hate (the premise of the dark side ) The emperor maneuvered everyone into place to fit his plans. I mean he completely played the Jedi like a well used violin and then discarded them when they where no longer useless. Just the manipulation alone was great and evil enough for me. Oh yeah and not to mention the almost causal destruction of a planet full of peaceful people on a planet where a gun or blaster was illegal. I think Lucas did a good job of painting a dark portrait of very believable evil characters.

Well, I'm going to throw myself into the minority here, but I seriously thought it sucked. Too much hype, way too little plot or acting. I mean, what's with the frankenstien Darth thing. 'Noooooo...' Rarr I can just picture the Emperor saying "It's alive! IT'S ALIVE!" after force lightning his @$$...
Then there's dear old Padme... I think she needed to visit the hospital to see what real child birth looks like and then there's the whole "Dear Annie, I'm choking *makes the universal sign for choking without showing any feeling* please use the force to give me a hiemlich maneuver"
At least Jar Jar only had 2 minutes of air time and 3 lines...
